HR consultant and parent Maureen Mutia explains that bullies often target weaker individuals, including quiet children within the school population.

Schools in the country need to adopt effective measures to curb bullying and guarantee a safe learning environment for children.

HR consultant and parent Maureen Mutia explains that bullies often target weaker individuals, including quiet children within the school population.

“You'd always find a bully is the person who wants to show dominance.  And they'll always pick somebody who's weak, who's not their peer,” Mutia told Radio Generation on Friday.

“They can't pick a strong person, because they know the minute they pick a strong person, they'll be beaten thoroughly, yeah, and they'll be put to their place,” she added.

Mutia called on schools to establish clear mechanisms for addressing bullying to ensure the safety of all learners.

“When we talk about the institutions, whether it's public or private, they need to have modalities of how to deal with this so that we can ensure that it's a safe and secure place for our children,” she explained.

Citing an incident in Kitengela. Kajiado County, earlier in October 2025, where a woman barred a Grade Two pupil from using the estate gate as punishment for allegedly fighting with her son in school, Mutia urged parents to exercise restraint when addressing cases of bullying.

“So some of those things, even when you're resolving these issues as parents, let's not get so aggressive. Because yes, the parent was saying the child had been bullied, and this kid had apologized, and the mom went to the house and apologized, but now she was using her powers to try and punish the kid further. What kind of punishment do you think that kid was learning?” said Mutia.
